Touring an 1817 Home on National Dr. in Newark

Today I enjoyed the experience of touring one of Newark's oldest homes with one of my Clients. This two-story home on National Dr. dates all the way back to 1817!

Unfortunately fire struck the interior a while ago and most of the house suffered smoke damage.

With the home being vacant and without electricty, this tour seemed like an episode of Ghost Hunters. Lots of nooks and crannies in this home, and luckily no ghosts or signs of paranormal activity. :)

If you look closely you can see the smoke damage on the staircase.

What a house this was at one time, and hopefully someone will come along who wants to restore it!

Enjoying a Day at The Works!

Phil Frye The Real Estate Guy and daughter Grace enjoyed a few hours on Sunday at The Works in downtown Newark. We renewed our Family Membership for just $60 and met up with Aunt Elizabeth and cousins Michael, Zack, Rachel, and Anna and covered most of the hands on gadgets and science experiments in just a couple of hours.

The girls got to dress up as pioneer girls and make designs on paper in The Print Shop (picture in top left: Anna, Rachel, and Grace.)

The kids also got to experiment with electricity and successfully avoided getting shocked. It took me 10 minutes to make my lightbulb light up, but only took eight-year-old Zack five minutes to figure his out (picture in the top right: Rachel, Zack, Michael, and Grace.)

And finally, Grace got to test drive a dragster (picture right).

CENTURY 21 Frank Frye Real Estate and Phil Frye the Real Estate Guy strongly recommend visiting The Works in downtown Newark.

Light Up a Life for Hospice of Central Ohio

Seven-year-old Grace Frye recently participated in Hospice of Central Ohio's Light Up a Life at Indian Mound Mall in Heath, OH.

After making a cash donation to Hospice of Central Ohio, Grace wrote the name of her Great Grandma Fitch on a paper dove, placed it on a Christmas tree, and then turned on a Christmas light bulb near the paper dove in memory of Madge Fitch who passed away in Nov. after being in Hospice of Central Ohio's care for five years.

Phil Frye has served on the Hospice of Central Ohio Board Directors for eight years, and has had three Grandparents as patients in Hospice of Central Ohio.

Happy 7th Birthday Gracie!

Grace Frye turned 7 years old on Dec. 21! Happy Birthday to the Best Little Girl in the World!

Dad and Grace spent Sat. at Indian Mound Mall where Grace found out even though she's a big girl, she can still ride the rides in the Food Court.

Sometimes I wish I could still fit in the airplace without rupturing a tendon or vital organ.

Happy Birthday Grace!!!

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

This Christmas Tree lights up the living room of the Frye's quaint home in the bustling city of Newark. Phil's guitars had to be moved in order to make room for this short needle tree, but at last check, at least one guitar had made its way back to the living room.

Molly, Grace, and Phil found this beauty among several fields of trees at Stout's Tree Farm in Utica. The Frye's recommend this place that features friendly people and customers that welcome dogs and kids. There was also free coffee, cookies, hot chocolate, and candy on a tree for kids in the barn. The trees were also reasonably priced.

Merry Christmas from the Frye's!

$1,000 Reward Offered on Jewel Thieves

Licking County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for anyone that has information that will help law enforcement with the investigation of a theft at a downtown Newark jewelry store.

The Newark Police Department reports around 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, two suspects stole loose diamonds valued at $10,600 from an unlocked jewelry case at HL Art Jewelers. A store employee observed the theft and called 911 and the two suspects left the store. Witnesses say they drove off in a car described as a gray Pontiac that was possibly a Bonneville and newer than 2000. The rear license plate was bent down and unreadable.

Both suspects are described as light skinned black males between 40-50 years old, well dressed, and wearing glasses. The first suspect is described as six-feet tall, weighing 200-220 pounds, with short hair and a bald spot on top. The second suspect is described as 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 tall, weighing 240-250 pounds, with a buzz cut.

Police say the suspects may not be from the Newark area, and a similar theft occurred in August at Pugh’s Jewelry store in Zanesville.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call the Licking County Crime Stoppers at 740-349-6888 or 1-888-488-9058. A special coding system protects the identity of the caller but allows for the reward to be issued at a later time.

Crime Stoppers also takes calls from persons with information about any felony. Information leading to the arrest and indictment of a felony suspect could qualify the caller for a reward as determined by the Crime Stoppers’ Board. Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization. Reward money comes from private individuals, businesses, and foundations that see Crime Stoppers as an integral tool in the community’s fight against crime. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to: Licking County Crime Stoppers, Inc., P.O. Box 304, Newark, OH 43058-0304.

Sitting on the Dock of the Elks

The House Band had a special guest on stage at its latest show. Licking County Board of REALTORS "Interim" Executive Officer Mark Evans joined the band for a rousing rendition of Sitting On the Dock of the Bay at LCBR's Holiday Party on Dec. 10 at the Newark Elks Lodge.

"Mark is a true rock and roll star," said Phil Frye, third lead guitarist. "He was better after a full practice round of the song, but you can't tell me that Otis Redding got it right his first time either."

Once in a Lifetime!

The other day I was getting a ride back to my office from a Newark Kiwanis Club meeting with my good friend Casey Claxon.

Casey mentioned he had something special in his backseat, and it turned out to be Parky, the official Park National Bank mascot outfit.

The moral of the story is, always check Casey's backseat for a once in a lifetime opportunity. This moment is right up there with trying on the head of Mr. Red in a storage room in Riverfront Stadium while interning for the Cincinnati Reds in 1993. I later found out the reason they stopped using that version of Mr. Red was something to do with asbestos.

What comes on the Corn Beef?

What do you think? Are you man/woman enough to eat all of this? I only got through half, but then again, I'm not as young as I once was.

This is the corn beef sandwich from Primanti Brothers Restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh. If you look closely, you can actually see the beef buried underneath the sweat cole slaw and french fries which makes this restaurant a special feature spot on television's Food Network.

When you go, you may see a line out the door, but it shouldn't be much more than a 15-20 minute wait. They also serve ice cold Yuengling on tap and several other sandwiches that feature the customary fries and slaw.

Enjoy, and remember to tell them that Phil Frye, "The Real Estate Guy" sent you! SELL & BUY with CENTURY 21 Frank Frye!

Believe In My Bearcats!

Who would have ever thought that the University of Cincinnati Bearcats football team would be ranked ahead of the all mighty The Ohio State University? Me, but that was back in 2002 when I thought for sure the Bearcats were going to upset Ohio State when they played in Cincinnati.

I watched that game while pacing in a Philadelphia hotel room on vacation. As the Bearcats continued to score against Ohio State that afternoon in Paul Brown Stadium, I started to pick up my phone to taunt my Buckeye friends but never dialed.

Remember how that story ended? Coach Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes rallied to beat the Bearcats, and then went on to win the national championship. Just imagine if Cincy would have pulled off the upset and knocked Ohio State out of the National Championship hunt.

I tell myself and anyone that will listen that Cincinnati let Ohio State win that game and continue its national championship run so the entire state could return to national football prominence and help our struggling economy.

The Bearcats had once again let me down, but just the fact that they gave me a reason to believe they could beat Ohio State was all I needed to proudly tell people that I graduated from University of Cincinnati, which was always followed up by the other person saying, "They gave Ohio State a good game."

Seven years later in Columbus, some Ohio State fans want to fire Coach Tressel and Notre Dame fans are waiting for Brian Kelly to leave Cincinnati so he can replace Charlie Weis. I'm just waiting for Cincinnati to win a National Championship and for Brian Kelly to stay for years and continue to build a national powerhouse the right way.

I always thought a Cincinnati championship would come on the basketball court, or some obscure sport that barely made any headlines. Now, I choose to believe that Cincinnati can continue to win football games this "One Great Season" and with a little luck, you never know, I may be calling you up in January to remind you that I graduated from the top football school in the nation, The University of Cincinnati.

Of course if that doesn't happen I can always look forward to my Chicago Cubs winning the 2010 World Series.

Grace Frye Sings National Anthem

Six and a half year old Grace Frye sang the National Anthem with Shawna Corder on Aug. 2 at the Licking County Settlers baseball game at Don Edwards Park in Newark. Her grandparents Frank and Phyllis Frye (left) cheered her on.

Click on the video below to see and hear Grace sing. The microphone cuts out a few times, but Grace and Shawna finish strong!

Grace takes singing lessons with Shawna at Martin Music in Newark, and has been practicing the Anthem with Shawna and her parents Molly and Phil Frye.

This is Grace's third singing performance in front of a crowd this year. In the Spring she sang a solo "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid at a Lakewood Schools fundraising event, and she also sang back-up on Sweet Home Alabama with The House Band at Park National Bank's Summer Spash at the Newark Maennerchor.

BBBS Helps Our Kids in the Community

If you're looking to make a difference in our community, make sure to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Licking and Perry Counties.

Studies show mentoring children helps them do better in school and stay out of trouble. BBBS has several rewarding programs for mentors.

Kristina Nixon and Kathy Fouts (pictured left) worked the grill at a recent Volunteer Appreciation Party at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

My wife, daughter, and I have been a family match with our little brother Jeffrey for eight years now. Jeffrey turns 17 this month.

We try to spend some quality time with Jeffrey once or twice a month. Activities include anything from bowling, or fishing, or just having a meal together and catching up with each other. Sometimes I think we learn as much from Jeffrey as we are trying to teach to him.

Since 2000, I've been a reading mentor with BBBS's Clem Reads program at John Clem Elementary in Newark. I work one on one with a student helping to improve his reading skills. It's just a half hour a week during the school year.

BBBS also has other volunteer programs including the Lunch Buddies programs, where volunteers go spend time with kids who are on their lunch break at school.

At one point, the dance floor doubled in participants as fans longed to be closer to the action.

Said one dancer following the show, "You guys rocked! You were awesome!"
The House Band members performing included: Jim McKivergin, Bob Handelman, Joe Wahl, Pat Painter, Jimmy Callen, and Phil Frye. Special Guest Joel Spahr, of The Beverage Source (now open on Sundays!) played bass.
